Coastal Rainforest map Coastal Rainforest, Westport

J. Friend and Co Kamahi Honey is harvested from Kapitea on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The area is known for its rugged landscape with its wild beaches and abundant rainforest.

The remoteness of the location adds its own distinct mark to the aroma and flavour of this honey. Locating the hives in the remote coastal rainforests, where there is an abundant concentration of Kamahi for the honeybees to feast on, creates the finest quality pure Kamahi honey.

Kamahi honey has the texture of soft lemon curd and has floral aromas of spring hedgerows, straw bales and wildflowers. It has smooth intense flavours with notes of honeysuckle and caramel. It is a honey of outstanding quality and is revered by chefs for its unique flavour profile.

Kamahi honey is the ideal sweetener for spicy dishes, such as Thai food, as it has a flavour slightly reminiscent of palm sugar. On the cheeseboard it proves an excellent match for white mould cheeses such as Camembert and Brie or more robust cheese such as a goat’s milk feta.

Kamahi flowersWeinmannia racemosa

The New Zealand native Kamahi tree flowers in spring time in the native beech forests inland on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Kamahi is one of New Zealand’s most abundant trees growing on the forest canopy surrounded by other natives.

Its small white spiky flowers are a favourite for honeybees. This remote and native environment produces our very pure J. Friend and Co Kamahi Honey.
