  • Vintage: January 2012
  • Location: Port Charles, Coromandel

Port Charles on the Coromandel Peninsula of the North Island is a rustic, relaxed and unspoiled area of New Zealand and is renowned for its brilliant beaches and rugged coastline.

A wonderfully deep coloured honey with an aroma of fresh walnuts, spice and malted caramel.  The flavour is rich, robust and malty with a hint of bitterness in the after taste.

Rewarewa Honey has a slightly savoury character that would lend itself well to cooking and is the perfect choice for people who like a strong honey flavour without overwhelming sweetness. Its robust character matches well with full flavoured, aged cheddar or nutty flavoured cheese which compliment the honey’s own nutty aroma.

Knightia excelsa
Maori name: Rewarewa
The Rewarewa tree (New Zealand’s Honeysuckle tree) is a
member of the Protea family (Proteaceae)
Rewarewa flowers from October to December
It is a distinctive tall upright branching tree, reaching up to 30 metres
In New Zealand’s late Spring (October to December) red, needle-like flowers cover the top branches of the tree. These flower clusters (inflorescence) slowly split as they mature and curl into tight intricate spirals. This spiral shape, seen frequently with plants in New Zealand forests, has become a New Zealand icon, symbolizing the unfolding potential of our life cycle. The unique flowers stay curled on the tree until late summer when they fall to cover the earth in a thick red carpet. These flowers are pollinated by bees and the many nectar-feeding birds of New Zealand.
